POSITION DESCRIPTION:

In this role you will be a key member of R&D projects for the next generation of highly automated metal 3D printing systems. You will plan and execute the development of machine vision and sensing equipment from requirements definition, implementation and testing to drive technology readiness. This will include the development and improvement of sensing technology to accelerate automation. Working with your team of highly skilled experts from around the world, you will:
  • Install new sensors for improved LPBF process automation with focus on camera-based melt pool monitoring and tomography
  • Select sensors/actuators and integration into existing systems. The focus is on sensors for non-destructive testing and condition monitoring in the context of additive manufacturing. Beneficial is knowledge about control boards for laser scanner applications (e.g. Real Time Communication (RTC))
  • Link sensors with the machine control system. For this purpose, common interfaces (analog/digital) as well as protocols (EtherCAT, TCP/IP) must be considered when connecting to the PLC (Beckhoff, Siemens)
  • Prototype software for the new sensor systems. This includes a basic user interface and analysis capabilities
  • Implement real-time solutions for processing very large amounts of data
  • Continuous technology and research review to accelerate LPBF process monitoring and automation
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of engineers and researchers
  • Analyze and solve complex technical problems
  • Perform tests and validations of the developed systems

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, physics or similar
  • 3+ years of experience in automation and sensing development, ideally in the field of machine control or condition monitoring
  • Machine Programming skills
  • Programming skills in languages such as Python, C#, C++
  • Machine Learning Awareness
  • Solution-oriented, hands-on mindset
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a team and good communication skills
  • Innovative spirit and enthusiasm for future technologies
